Date March 25, March 26, After attending a magnet middle school, Jack went to a private high school in his senior year and then graduated cum laude from Amherst College. Of your research, what struck you the most? Despite the efforts by elite institutions to recruit low-income students and diversify their campuses, disadvantaged students are still experiencing roadblock after roadblock that really makes them feel like second-class citizens in a first-class world. The privileged poor went to a high school that the top 5 percent or the top 1 percent send their kids to, so very often low-income kids might study abroad in high school, go to luxurious places, or fly in private jets. The doubly disadvantaged come from low-income neighborhoods and typically distressed high schools, and when they enter college, they experience a real culture shock. There is an economic component because both the privileged poor and the doubly disadvantaged are low-income students. The prime example is the policies that close the cafeterias during recesses.

In December , Amherst College imposed its first major sanction under a new get-tough sexual misconduct policy, expelling a year-old senior after a disciplinary board concluded that he had forced a female classmate to perform oral sex during an alcohol-infused encounter nearly two years earlier. In April , however, the expelled student presented the college with new evidence — a series of text messages the woman sent to two other male students immediately after the alleged rape, according to a lawsuit.

The accuser testified during the disciplinary hearing that she had texted a friend to come over after the alleged attack. In the 13 months since the expelled student obtained the texts and gave them to college officials, it appears Amherst has taken no public steps to revisit its decision to expel the student. On Friday, his lawyer, Max D. In the weeks after he was expelled and ordered to leave campus, Doe was alerted to the existence of the text messages and obtained copies of both sets of texts with the help of friends, according to Stern.

The text messages are included in the lawsuit. His statement did not address a question from the Globe about whether the college is still confident that the decision was right. The lawsuit is also likely to further fuel an ongoing debate about the tough new standards on sexual assault adopted by colleges and universities under federal government pressure, standards that many legal scholars believe violate the rights of those accused of sexual misconduct.

Amherst College is a prestigious, private liberal arts college founded in the Western Massachusetts town of Amherst in Amherst College took its name from the town and the town took its name from Lord Jeffery Amherst, a colonial-era military hero. However, through some recent revisionist history it came to light that Lord Jeffery Amherst, the commander of British forces in North America during the French and Indian War, may have supported the idea of dispensing blankets laced with the smallpox virus to Indians—an early example of biological warfare.

After a lengthy nomination process and a campus-wide vote the college adopted the prehistoric, and very extinct, mammoth as its new mascot. Supporters of the new mammoth moniker also liked the fact that the Columbian Mammoth was an herbivore and thought to have been sociable, traveling with their families in herds, and rather docile in temperament.

What do you think about when you think about sexual harassment? A new case out of Amherst College , a prestigious Massachusetts liberal arts college, offers an important reminder that harassment can take many, many different forms and shapes. According to a suit filed by Dimaris Barrios-Beltran, a former lecturer in Amherst’s Spanish department, professors were told to hire teaching assistants TAs who were “pretty faces”—TAs who were then to be encouraged by the professors they assisted to solicit students for sex in hopes of bolstering enrollment in the Spanish department.

The Washington Post reports that Barrios-Beltran’s own teaching assistant allegedly called her “in tears” after being treated by a Spanish department supervisor “like a prostitute. Other TAs reported similar incidents. Barrios-Beltran filed several complaints—with a dean, with a human resources representative, with the school’s Title IX coordinator—about the supervisor’s behavior. And while none of her complaints were ever directly addressed, she was told shortly thereafter that her contract would not be renewed for the following year because of “low enrollment” numbers in her courses.

Harassment can include “sexual harassment” or unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature.

Out of all the initiatives, the Greenway dorms were by far the greatest, as they were designed with smaller communal spaces in order to prevent the cultivation of a partying culture. As students of Amherst College, we came to wonder whether creating such smaller communal spaces in the new dorm has taken any effect on the social culture, if any. For example, we questioned whether the prevalence of drinking has subsided and whether there has been a shift in where the drinking culture occurs.

Over the past few years, ACEMS has grown immensely in size and in professionalism, transitioning from a student club to an official medical service that the school provides. We asked ACEMS for partial data around the time of the demolition in order to evaluate the drinking culture during these critical years; we received access to de-identified data, including date and time, type of call, location, and the EMTs on call.

These calls were used as a baseline of the severity of the situation, for it is a known phenomenon that students do not call emergency services unless the patient has reached a critical state. Thus, we used proportion of alcohol and drug-related calls as a proxy for prevalence of partying in pertinent locations on campus.
